2018 had a fantastic start with CES 2018 event where different companies showcase their best and upcoming technologies this year. The event went amazing with some unbelievable techs.

It presented the most rumored tech of 2017 that is under-display fingerprint scanner in smartphones which was rumored to come in Samsung S8 and even in iPhone X but it was brought by a Chinese smartphone company vivo with synaptics.

The smartphone is equipped with an optical fingerprint scanner placed under an OLED display because it is not possible under LCD panel.
Optical fingerprint scanner -
In optical fingerprint scanner the light is used to print an impression of your fingerprint so, it is not so secured. It is mostly used in office works for attendance or bio-security.
Capacitive fingerprint scanner -
Smartphones used capacitive fingerprint scanners where a physical finger is needed to get a fingerprint. The highs and lows of the finger is used to generate pulses which mapped by scanner to build a fingerprint impression. It is very secure to use.
Normal optical fingerprint scanners are not safe because it can read a fingerprint printed on a piece of paper but it is safe in case of smartphone because a physical finger is needed for touchscreen above the scanner to work.
The light of the OLED screen is used to read the fingerprint.
OLED panel has very tiny gaps in between the LEDs through which the light goes inside after getting reflecting by the finger.

Same is not possible in case of LCD panel because there is no space for the light to enter and not even possible to place the scanner below the screen.

These smartphones would be rolling out in market this year.
It is also possible to have a screen with having fingerprint scanner under the whole display but it will take time of around 2-3 years and will be expensive.
Advantages -
This helps in removal of physical home button and no need of placing a capacitive fingerprint scanner in the rear side of phone. It will reduce the width of the phone to make it slim and bezel-less.

This is a great a advantage to the smartphone users as they do not need to pick up their phone all the time to unlock it or to scan their face or iris.
