Indian Railways introduced Bio-Toilets in trains in 2011 which is a technology used by DRDO for using Bio-Toilets for army camps in high altitude due to shortage water and place.

Few years back toilets in trains had either septic tanks or nothing. Septic tanks consumes a lot of space usually 3 times that of bio-toilets and require maintenance or cleaning after every journey.
Due to open toilets all waste matter fall on railway track which makes it dirty and produce harmful diseases.

Bio-toilets will help in reducing these dirtiness.
Bio-toilets contains of anaerobic bacteria which multiplies in presence of oxygen which is present in human waste.
These bacteria decomposes the waste matter into water and gas (methane).
Water then falls on the track and the gas comes out through the outlet of the tank.
This is a natural process of decomposition which requires very less water.
The toilet clearly instructs not to pour any anti-septic solution as this will kill all the bacteria and will stop the operation.
Also throwing plastics inside it will affect the functioning of it.

Bio-toilets are very useful in maintaining the cleanliness of the tracks and are very clean to use.
